Dear Readers,
Last week while we were on Work Experience, our parents received a text saying that we were heading to a different mini company competition the Monday we come back...so in other words today! It was being held just outside Dublin and their were 32 other companies to compete against. The awards that were given out were 1st 2nd and 3rd in the following categories innovation, marketing, accounts, sustainability, presentation and quality. Then four companies were chosen to go to the national finals on the 7th of April! We were one of those groups!! and we won 1st place for sustainably and 3rd place for quality. I was so happy that we did well in this competition after not doing so well in the other enterprise awards.
The face we got such short notice and that we wouldn't have any class time, in it's own ways was a good thing because we weren't stressing out during school and asking teachers to do stuff also the fact we all had it done before hand and kept the stuff from the last competition meant we were more prepared and had little to do. Though we didn't get through in the other competition it did help us with this one because we had a better idea of what to expect of the competition.
Even so, this competition was run differently and is all about learning from mini company and what is does for the TY student. There were 3 parts to our day; adjudicating, discovering other mini companies and group discussion. Each group was split into A's, B's and C's. We then just rotated around the three activities. We got a free lunch and then it was prise giving time.
While it was my turn on the stand for adjudication I meet with two judges, and each of them ask pretty tough questions! But I satisfied that we answered them well and explained ourselves well too which is important. In the other other competition we only met one judge and they would have already seen our business report which isn't fair. I like how more than one judge visits you and that they don't have an idea about you and your company before they meet because they don't have your business report.
There was some stiff competition. The ideas were great and really innovative. You would never think of them before this, but their pretty logical and cheap solutions to a daily problem. And that's what all the competitions want to see in this current climate. the whole aim of the competition is to get young people thinking about these new and wonderful ideas, as well as learning, team work, communication and business skills along the way. It's great because we can not only apply them to the other things we do in TY but also outside of school in everyday life. Well maybe not so much now but hopefully in the future!
I had a great day with a great result and I'm looking forward to the finals which are only 3 weeks away! So not mush time to prepare...better get started then ;)
Thanking you,
Roisin.P.

Mini Company Competition!
Dear Readers,
Today was the day we had all been waiting for. The Student Enterprise awards. This was the first round and it felt like it just snuck up on us all to quickly. All this week we have been preparing our stands and speechs so we could blow the judges away with our idea! And thrust me the stress was unbelievable.
So the Mini Company I'm involved with is Green Hero. The magazine for primary school children. Our aim is to teach them and their parents about caring for the enviorment but in a fun and easy way. We got amazing feedback from the first issue and we have just given out second issue.
We also got really good feedback from the judges! They loved our idea and how professional everything was. We were one of the last groups to be judge so the waiting was tense and at one stage we thought they had forgotten us! But of course that was just nerves. Even though everything seemed like a disaster yesterday, like that nothing would be finished on time, it all came together in the end and we pulled together as a team. I'm really proud of what we have achieved, especially since we were shortlisted for the county final!
Some of the other Mini Companies there were really good and looked amazing. I think it was interesting, looking back on the day, how harsh and judgemental you can be on yourself and your work. Every stand and idea I saw, I compared our own and criticised our efforts, thinking they weren't enough, thinking we had failed. Trying to be positive is really hard when you're under pressure and nervous. We were excited going but the longer we waited the worse my nerves got and the excitement drain away. But then when we we were called out as shortlisted it felt good. It's amazing how....human, one can be. We can be good in giving others a chance but never ourselves. Maybe it's just me, let me know.
Il update you if we get through!

Green Hero Issue 2!
Dear followers,
The mini company I'm involved with, Green Hero, plan on bringing out our second issue before the end of February! We are really tight on time and we are a little short of cash. But we are nearly there and hopefully it will go down as well as the first issue did!
The theme of our next issue will be water and our endangered species will be the whale. It looks amazing and in this issue we will be showing you how to grow sweetpeas and a new recipe for baking too! We also took a trip to the Leixlip water treatment plant and learned how water is treated so you and I can drink it, we have lots of great photos and a nice simple article to go with it too. So we really wanted to pull out all the stops on this issue as it will proberly be our last!:(
We hope our company will do well in the competition on March 3rd! (to soon!) We have worked really hard to get this far.
Please check out our BRAND NEW website at http://www.greenhero.ie/ and support.
Thank you,

Mini Compmany Talk
Dear followers,
Today Orla from Kildare Enterprise Broad came into us this morning to check up on our mini companies and to see how we are getting on.
When she came to our group and saw the first issue she was very pleased in hoe well it looked, which is good because she wasn't to sure about magazines and books entering the competition this year. Because our magazine is completely different than what has been done before and because very few have entered the competition we don't have many to compete with! Orla said that because of this we should really work on our PR and run with that and blow the Judges away on the day!
We hope to have the second issue out around mid-February, but sponsorship is a bit of a problem this time, just trying to scrape together the funds!
On the bright side we are aiming to have a website, as well as the blog, set up by next week! It will up soon so look out!
I'll keep you posted on how we are getting on,
Thanks again,
Roisin.P.

Water Treatment Plant
Dear followers,
Today our mini company Green Hero, went to the Leixlip Water Treatment Plant. We did this so we could write an article on it for our second issue, and also since the theme for the second issue is water.
We got a tour of the plant and saw the process water goes through just so we can drink it! We saw how they store the water and the chemicals they use to threat the water. It was fascinating to see the journey from river to reservoir.
We learned a lot and have loads to write about for the magazine, which we hope to publish around mid February! There is a lot left to do though but we are well on our way.
Fingers crossed all will go to plan,
Thanks,
Roisin.P.

Mini Company: 2nd Outing
Dear Followers,
On Wednesday we went to the Moat Theatre in Naas for our second talk for mini company. The talk was based on marketing, gather and using market research and financing your project. Our company Green Hero had a lot done on this already but they gave us a list of more things within these areas especially financing. So it turns out there's a lot more work to be done than we expected!
We are designing the magazine at the moment! So it's all coming together nicely and we're getting really excited about it all now that's it's materialising. So hopefully I'll have a picture of the finished product soon.
Thanks,
Talk Soon,

Mini Company
Dear followers,
This Monday Orlaigh from Kildare Enterprise Broad came in to talk to us about our mini company project. We had to explain to her our ideas and how we were going to put them in place. She really quized us about it to help us and she gave us her ideas and told us her doubts.
It was a real insight into what the judges are looking for and how we should make a simple idea into the next big thing in order to wow the judges at the awards in January!
Our mini company Green Hero (greenheromag.blogspot.com) is doing great at the moment. We have nearly achieved our money target! Which is great! We are now working on what's going into the mag and it's design. So still a lot of work to do, but notting that's impossible!
Talk Soon,
Thanks,
