Writing Workshop

Dear Followers,
On Wednesday we had a writer and illustrator named Oisin McGann come into us and talk to us about creative writing. The aim of the workshop was to show us how the get ideas, develop them and change them to make great stories.

He said that we all get ideas but we never write them down so we forget them. Oisin himself has three or four notebooks on the go so whenever he gets an idea, hears something interesting or sees something he writes it down into one of his notepads. All the great writers and artisans do this including Yeats and De Vinci!

he showed us how easy it is to take a very boring and ordinary object and turn it into something amazing and alien! He took a shoe and developed it into a blood sucker monster in a matter of minuets. It was really cool, but of course none of this comes without practise. You have to practise changing and morphing things or if you want to do illustrations you have to practise drawing things all the time, so you learn to refine your work and produce results quicker.

Oisin McGann's books are mainly fantasy horror books, more aimed at an young male audience but when he read excerpts from to of his books you couldn't help but want to hear more! They were fascinating.

he also made a drawing of one of his characters and signed it and gave it to our class which was nice of him. While drawing it he answered questions and guided us through the process of making an illustration and what materials you would use. That's one thing I love art, a couple of well coordinated lines and you have an amazing picture!

I also read some of his blogs on his website, just to see what his approach to blogging is. It was interesting and made me think about the way I blog, especially coming up to the student blog challenge. I think I should avoid just writing down details of what we did, but of my feelings coming from doing an activity and what my thoughts were on doing something. I think it will improve my blog and make them a more interesting read.

If you have any suggestions in how I should change my blog, do let me know and I'll try my best.

Thanks again,
Roisin.P.

  2. Dear Roisin,
Your blog so very interesting! I saw your name on the blogging challenge and I was intrigued by your interests and country! I live in Bayonne, NJ in the U.S. and I blog as part of my music classes. Blogging has become such a huge part of my life and I simply love to post. I really think that the more time and attention you spend on your blog, the easier it will become. It is quite apparent that you have a natural gift to write, so run with it. Great job and keep up the good work!
