Dear Readers,
On Thursday, we had an all day djembé workshop! We learned some pretty cool rhythms and when the different base drums were added it all came together really well! As a music lover I was really excited about and really enjoyed the workshop! Out of all the drums and rhythmic instruments I tired my favorite was the djembe.
Dave, our teacher, was really cool too. He showed us so much stuff and kept it interesting and fun. Which can be hard in an all day workshop. I loved how everyone in the class was working together to get the right sound and that everyone put loads into it, which made extra nice.
We also learned the history of the djembe. Like the fact that it comes from west Africa around Mali. It is about 800 years old and along with other rhythmic instruments it play a huge part in tribal life there.
I also learned how the djembe, its players and rhythms used have affected western music and modern music. For instance rhythms used on a modern drum set come from rhythms used on the djembe.
I really enjoyed the workshop, and could never say once that I was bored! Definitely in my Top5 of best things I've done in TY!
The video was made in West Africa by French film crew. It shows the importance of rhythm, music and dance in peoples everyday lives in West Africa, its amazing and it also shows you the process of djembe making.
This video made me think of how rhythm and music is important in my life. I love music and I listen to it everyday. I love a good drum beat on a song. When I bake something I always have a rhythm as I stir or mix, preferring to do things by hand, the messy way. Even as I type this post my fingers have a rhythm pushing the keys! Its all around us, just have to listen. I love going into the city and just sitting down and listening to the hustle and bustle of a busy city, it makes me feel part of one big music piece and it's a piece we all contribute to.
Hope you enjoy the video,
Thanking you,
Roisin.P.
